Paintings from Picasso's blue period (1901-1904) depict forlorn people painted in shades of blue, evoking feelings of sadness and alienation. After his move to Paris in 1904, Picasso's rose period paintings took on a warmer more optimistic mood. In 1907 he and French painter George Braque pioneered cubism.

1901 - 1904.
They both are realistic in the sense that the paintings depict something that the is interpretable unlike some instance with his Cubism. They both are 3 dimension and have depth two them. And finally they both depict subjects that are out of the ordinary- Blue period subjects are usually outcasts of society(postitutes, beggers, drunks, the frail and sick) and in the Rose period they are usually circus people or harlequins. Quite an odd bunch I would say.
And their both phases of Picasso :)
