  • a salt crystal is cubic with positively charged sodium atoms having negatively charged chlorine atoms as their nearest neighbors and negatively charged chlorine atoms having positively charged sodium atoms as their nearest neighbors. these atoms are not actually bonded but only electrostatically attracted by their opposite charges. this makes for a weak brittle crystal that easily shatters.
  • a diamond crystal is tetrahedral with very strong covalent bonds between every carbon atom. this makes for a very strong hard crystal.

Where are gem found?

Most precious gems such as diamonds can most commonly be find in and around volcanoes or volcanic tubes.Gems are found all over the world, depending on which gems you are looking for. South Africa is well known for diamonds but they are also found in Brazil and Siberia/Russia. Emeralds are found in Colombia and Siberia. Rubies are found in Australia, Montana/USA, and Vietnam.

Who discovered the first crystal?

This depends on whether salt, feldspar, or frost was discovered first and by whom; salt is at the beach and in caves; feldspar is near ancient volcanos; frost is anywhere below freezing. These minerals already crýstallize microscopically and are called crýptocrýstalline in raw form; therefore any rock that is not glassy already consists of crýstals. If one talks of those seen by the naked eye, I would say salt was the first discovered in Africa. But who was the first species and must it be within the Homo genus? The first walkers, Homo erectus, had the ability to migrate to other continents and could likely be the first discoverers.

What qualities must a mineral possess in order to be considered a gem?

Some minerals have a crystal structure that is hard enough to be durable when worn on a daily basis. If this crystal structure is rare and possesses clarity it becomes valuable, and can be called a gem crystal.
