I'm not and expert, but usually eating habits are due to the situations people are in.
Usually if a person is over weight or obese it is either from their upbringing, meaning food has always been a 'big part' in there lives and the person may know no different. Or, there is the emotional side to it. I myself am an emotional eater, however I'm a size 8 (UK), because I have a controlled diet but a few years ago a death in my family made me take to food for comfort, I'd eat when I was bored, eat when I was sad, I'd eat when I'm tired, I'd just eat, and eventually 3 years on I'd gotten to my biggest size, size 14 (UK) and I said enough, so then I controlled what I ate.
Eating in many cases is the only thing people have control of, if their lives are spirally out of control, so when a person need some sort of stability in their lives food is the first, quickest and easiest option. Because no one can MAKE you eat unless they used severe force or fed you through a feeding tube. Same as people can't stop you eating, unless they were to raid your house of everything edible and were to take all your money.
A lot of the time when a person is bored or if they haven't eaten in a while or they are sad something in peoples brains seems to click and the first thing it thinks of is food. For Instance, boredom, when I used to be bored I would turn to the fridge, as if the food 'entertained' me in some way.
Other cases are pure laziness, but I enjoy watching television shows like 'The Biggest Looser' (UK & USA) and documentaries on people with obesity, and almost all of the people on the shows are either used to an un-balanced diet from childhood, or something happened in their lives to make there diet spiral out of control.
People tend to mix the feeling of hunger with boredom or some other emotion.
