The Red-back Spider is one of only two species where the male is actively involved in assisting the female in sexual cannibalism. The male is much smaller than the female and will somersault to place its abdomen over the female's mouthparts. It two out of three case, the female will consume the male while mating continues and even if the male survives the matting ritual, they will die soon after anyway. Males gain two very important advantages by sacrificing themselves in this manner. Firstly, males who are eaten are able to engage in sexual activities for longer periods, allowing more eggs to be fertilised in one sitting. Secondly, females who have devoured a male while mating are more likely to reject subsequent males. The female can store sperm and use it over a period of two years, producing many clutches of eggs belonging to the dead male. Female Red-back Spiders can lay eggs as often as every 25 to 30 days, with between 40 to 300 eggs in each clutch, some can even lay up to 5000 eggs. The eggs hatch about 13 to 15 days after being lain and the young spiders will leave the maternal web soon after via a droplet of silk caught on the wind. This strand of silk will eventually latch on to an object, where the young spider will establish its own web.
