In "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry, the rising action includes Annemarie's family taking in Ellen, the Rosens' daughter, to help protect her from the Nazis. As tensions in Copenhagen rise and the Nazis start targeting Jewish families, the Johansens must come up with a plan to help Ellen and her family escape to safety. This leads to a series of suspenseful events as the characters navigate the dangers of Nazi-occupied Denmark.
