Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu was a French social commentator and political thinker who lived during the Era of the Enlightenment.

He is famous for his articulation of the theory of separation of powers, taken for granted in modern discussions of government and implemented in many constitutions throughout the world. He was largely responsible for the popularization of the terms feudalism and Byzantine Empire. He died in 1755 though, so he did not see the French Revolution take place. His ideas though were very popular with the French Bourgoise.

Montesquieu helped to spread the He also denounced slavery and was for equal rights for women, both Enlightened ideas.

Most importantly, his work "the Spirit of the Laws" he basically described the different types of government and praised the checks and balance system and the constitutional monarchy of Britain.

These writings helped to inspire the mainly middle class "bourgeoisie" to overturn the current failing government and to try to install a newer, enlightened government. ideals of the Enlightenment.
