Reserve umpires keep the score and backup time, keep an eye on the dugouts and teams, record any information about substitutions and scoring, record times and durations of cards, and watch any suspended players. Then if one of the onfield umpires is injured or removed from the game, they can take over for them.

What is the role of a disengaged hockey umpire?

The engaged umpire is the one currently in control of play, normally because the ball is within their circle or 23 metre area. The disengaged umpire is, simply enough, the other umpire on the field, their coumpire. Their role is to provide asistance to the engaged umpire, to cover any areas of the field in which they are unsighted, and to maintain supervision of off-the-ball players. If necessary, the disengaged umpire should also focus on the timekeeping aspects (i.e. calling the end of halves) while their coumpire is distracted.

What is the role of a referee in netball?

Netball doesn't have referees they have umpires. Their role is to rule on the plays in a game. If an umpire controls the game very strictly it can slow the game down which can have an impact on the players and enjoyment to spectators. A good umpire will arbitrate on rules allowing some leniency, enabling a fast and smooth game...which makes for an exciting spectacle.
