The Watergate scandal is what eventually brought down Richard Nixon. Nixon himself never admitted guilt for anything. The President was faced with a guaranteed impeachment in the US Senate, which led him to resign before that happened on 9 August 1974.

The scandal began with a burglarly at the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate complex in Washington, DC. As a result of investigations by many federal law enforcement agencies, the House Judiciary Committee voted three Articles of Impeachment. Assured that the Senate would vote to convict, Nixon resigned 9 August 1974.

Nixon sent men into the Watergate office building in Washington to break into the Democratic headquarters. A security guard came by and found tape on the door holding the jam from the door. He went in a found 5 men in the office and they were arrested. Nixon denied knowing anything about the break in, but two reporters from the Washington Post had an informant tell them there were tapes and to "follow the money". The tapes were of Nixon giving orders for the crime and his lawyer flipped on him giving the rest of the story. All of them broke the law. Several were sent to prison and Nixon had to resign. Much of what is going on today with Trump is very much like Nixon. I guess he didn't read his history book because he is making some of the same mistakes and Cohen has 16 phones and blackberries with taped conversations. I am willing to guess Trumps voice is on those recordings.
