Insects (Insecta) is the scientific class to which lightning bugs (Lampyridae famiy) belong.

A lightning bug or firefly has two antennae; a body that is divided into three segments as head, thorax and abdomen; three sets of jointed legs; compound eyes; and a skeleton on the outside of the body. These are what characterize insects. Within the insect group, a firefly or lightning bug is described as a beetle. It has two pairs of wings. The lower wings underneath are lighter and used for flying. The upper wings above are harder and used for protection.
