There are several types of trees that produce wood that gets labeled "mahogany." The name mahogany comes from the Native American name for the wood of the species Swietenia mahagoni. Woods considered "true mahogany" all belong to the mahogany family Meliaceae and include:

Swietenia mahagoni, known as West Indian or Cuban mahogany

Swietenia macrophylla, which is closely related to Swietenia mahagoni, and known as Brazilian Mahogany,Honduras Mahogany, Big Leaf Mahogany, Big-leaf Mahogany, Bigleaf Mahogany, broad-leaved Mahogany, large-leaved Mahogany, "genuine" mahogany, Sky Fruit, or Tropical American Mahogany.

Khaya, a genus of seven species of trees in the mahogany family Meliaceae, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar which is known as African Mahogany.

Toona, a genus of five species of trees in the mahogany family, Meliaceae, native from Afghanistan south to India, and east to North Korea, Papua New Guinea and eastern Australia which is known as Chinese Mahogany.
