Although diamond is still considered the hardest, the bulk modulus of the metal osmium has recently been found to be 476 GPa. That is over 7% more incompressible than diamond, but it is never found pure enough in nature to challenge the diamond.

Although the name "corundum" may not be familiar to most people as a gem stone, rubies and sapphires are in the corundum family of minerals. In geology, there is a standard of measuring hardness called the Mohs Hardness Scale. It ranks minerals from from softest (talc) to hardest (diamond) on a scale of 1 to 10, respectively. Corundum is number 9.
