The Apostle Paul had been imprisoned for quite some time when he wrote his letters to different congregations that he had helped establish. His intent was to offer encouragement to each congregation.

In the case of the Philippians, he felt special love for them. Although they were poorer than many, they had demonstrated excelling love and generosity to their Christian brothers in other congregations as well as towards Paul. They had also been very zealous in their preaching work and Paul wanted to encourage them to keep up the good work.
