The importance of Washington and his army crossing the river, is the first sign of Washington fighting to get his army back, since he only had about 2500 men at that time. Since winter was coming all of the men's "contracts" were up they didn't have to serve in it anymore. Plus they were very eager to get back home since they barely had any food left, most of their clothes had fallen apart, most men were shirtless, and shoeless. Since it was winter they be walking in the snow, if you were looking to follow them u wouldn't look for prints you'd look for blood. At this point all the men wanted to just go. Washington had about 6 days to defeat the Heshans over in Trenton or the British would have come in and won the whole war. It was hard for Washington since he started out with 17000 men and lost too many, so he had to show he was still in this. So a painting of them crossing the river then leading onto defeating the Heshans and getting Trenton back, was a HUGE turn around in history's time.

Prior to his crossing of the Delaware river to attack the Hessian soldier stationed in Trenton, Washington's forces had suffered several successive defeats and morale was low. After General crossing of the Delaware River north of Trenton on Christmas Night, Washington led the main body of the Continental Army against the soldiers garrisoned at Trenton. After a brief battle, nearly the entire Hessian force was captured, with negligible losses to the Americans. The battle significantly boosted the Continental Army's flagging morale, and inspired re-enlistments.

because they crossed the river to fight the first battle they won. if they didn't win that battle, they might have not have won the war because the soldiers were giving up hope

It was one of the coldest winters in history and a total surprise for the Hessian troops who were drunk and sleepy from their Christmas Eve celebration.
