Shakespeare was a popular playwright and poet, but not necessarily an important person politically. He made a great deal of money with the acting company, the two theaters, and real estate investments. He bought the second biggest hose in his home town, and died rich and famous.

The King took over the patronage of the theatre company Shakespeare belonged to. Indeed, members of the royal family took over patronage of all of the major acting companies in England at this time. Since the Company had had no difficulty in attracting a patron, this was not really a benefit to them. They may have acquired some extra prestige by being chosen by the king as opposed to the queen or Prince of Wales, but not much.

He didn't. Shakespeare's company was honoured to have the King as a Patron, and when they performed at court they performed Shakespeare's plays, but the king did not single out Shakespeare for any special honour.
