Acidity, defined as the pH of the waste stream, is central to proper water treatment. Firstly, pH effects the solubility of different compounds. In a nutshell the job of the waste water chemist is to make all contaminants within the waste water insoluble (remove them from solution). So the skilled physical chemical waste water operator will produce a reaction that creates a pH best suited for this purpose. Secondly, in the case of biological water treatment methods such as the use of aerobic bacteria, pH extremes can harm or kill the culture. So pH must be maintained within a range near 7. This is a complex topic. A full book could be written on all of ways pH can effect the many different sub-feilds of water treatment. But in answer to the the posted question - VERY significant.
