We have one right now and it measures about 1 1/2 inches long and about 1/3 in thickness. We are still waiting for it to emerge. Its been in its chrysalis for 8 days. It has a light and dark brown woody look to it and hangs by a thin single thread it has wrapped around a stick. It also has itself attached to the stick with the disposed guts it pooped out.
It depends upon which blue swallowtail butterfly. There are several species of blue swallowtails including (in the US) the female Eastern Black Swallowtail, female Tiger Swallowtail has blue, female Spicebush Swallowtail ... and more.
Their wing span can range from 3 inches to nearly 5 inches, depending upon the species, health of the butterfly when it was a caterpillar, food availability, and time of year.
