What are the spiritual effects of baptism?

To be sanctified is to be set apart as holy, for a special or sacred use. Baptism, when scripturally applied is an act of good concious toward God, showing the burial and resurrection of our Lord, as putting down the old man into a watery grave and then being raised from the watery grave in the newness of life, a life hence forth dedicated to the service of the Lord. Baptism is the spiritual ritual that is the door to the Church, where by one becomes a member of the body of Christ, the Church, the root and ground of truth in this world, the forum wherein God receives his honor and glory. You see, it is one thing to be saved but quite another to be a God recognized member of His church where by we may honor Him in this world. It is God's grace that saves us through the faith of Jesus His Son, His grace that keeps us saved and His grace where by we find strength to live for him.

According to Christian belief, baptism signifies forgiveness of sins and a new life as a Christian.

Christians differ on whether Baptism itself actually has any effects. Some believe that it confers grace of itself. These Baptize infants. Others believe it only signifies what has already taken place in salvation, these are the Baptists and others who practice what some call 'believers Baptism.' This latter group do not Baptize infants as they are not of an age when they can understand and so believe for themselves.

In the first case those who Baptize infants believe that God's grace is operative in the performance of the rite.

In the case of the latter, Baptism itself confers no grace but signifies what God has already done in salvation, and thus Baptism is regarded by this latter group of no effect directly but nevertheless important.

According to Scripture, through baptism you are born of the Spirit and enter the Kingdom of Heaven. This is obviously a parallel with the way you entered the country in which you were born which confers on you certain rights. "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

• imprints an indelible spiritual character upon the soul
• infuses grace into the soul which becomes the dwelling of the Holy Ghost
• cleanses the stain of Original Sin (though not the effects)
• cleanses all actual sins
• suspends all temporal punishment due for any previous actual sins

1262 The different effects of Baptism are signified by the perceptible elements of the sacramental rite. Immersion in water symbolizes not only death and purification, but also regeneration and renewal. Thus the two principal effects are purification from sins and new birth in the Holy Spirit.

1263 By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin. In those who have been reborn nothing remains that would impede their entry into the Kingdom of God, neither Adaman's sin, nor personal sin, nor the consequences of sin, the gravest of which is separation from God.

Baptism leaves an indelible mark on your soul. It forever marks you as a Christian. With baptism, you are cleansed from original sin and initiated into the church. Baptism is the first of three sacraments of initiation.
