The United States Marine Corps traces its institutional roots to the Continental Marines of the American Revolutionary War, formed by Captain Samuel Nicholas at Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on 10 November 1775, to raise 2 battalions of Marines. That date is regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps' "birthday". At the end of the American Revolution, both the Continental NavyQuasi-War with France, Congress created the United States Marine Corps. Marines had been enlisted by the War Department as early as August 1797 for service in the new build frigates authorized by Congress. The "Act to provide a Naval Armament" of March 18, 1794 and Continental Marines were disbanded in April 1783. The institution itself would not be resurrected until 1798. In that year, in preparation for the authorizing them had specified the numbers of Marines to be recruited for each frigate.
The Continental Congress established the Continential Army on June 14, 1775 and commissioned George Washington Commander in Chief on June 15, 1775. Since he was born February 22, 1732, that would make him about 43 years old at the time of his being selected. NOTE: There is some historical disagreemet about the specific date General Washington accepted the appointment. Some historians claim that he did not officially accept until June 19, 1775.

Actual independence was declared by the Second Continental Congress on July 2, 1776. On that date, a resolution to declare independence from Great Britain was passed by a voice vote. The journals of the Second Continental Congress record this vote. The written Declaration was then authorized in order to make it known to the world that the colonies had declared their independence and give the reasons for doing so. John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2 will be forever remembered as the day of independence and celebrated with parties and fireworks. He was off by two days even though he was actually correct.

The Continental Congress met to establish a main policy on 2 separate occasions. The first time lasted from September 5, 1776, to October 26, 1776. The second time started May 10, 1775 and ended with the passing of the Declaration of Independence.

The First Continental Congress set a deadline to get the British to respond. This deadline was for embargoing British goods. The date for this to begin was December 1, 1774.
On July 2nd, the Second Continental Congress approved a movement for independence from Britain. This congress would later adopt the Declaration of Independence.

October 13th, 1775. This was the date that lead to the formation of the U.S Navy. Remember when the Second Continental Congress met on May 10, 1775, the colonists were already fighting the British. Before long, it was clear that if the Colonies were to survive, a Navy was necessary.
