Like it or not more people simply call it Bamathen anything else. University of Alabama fans and alumni like calling the state Tide which is a misnomer. Since Alabama is the only US State that lacks an Official Nickname almost anything is fair game. The Heart of Dixie came close to becoming an acceptable nickname and was even used on Vehicle Plates for some years. It may have lost its popularity during the Civil Rights years when a nickname without Confederate overtones seemed more desireable. Yellowhammer State seemed to be in vogue for some. It could be passed off to visitors as a reference to the State's Official Bird and held in the hearts of hard-core Southerners only as a reference honoring the CSA's Alabama Cavalry Troopers and by extension the State Highway Patrol Troopers.
