Chapter one of the Jungle Book is the short story Mowgli's brothers. It covers the period from Mowgli's adoption by the Seeonee wolfpack to his first great confrontation with the tiger Shere Khan. It is the primary story that Disney cannibalizes for their movie adaptation.

I think you are confusing the appalling Disney adaptation with the original book. Rudyard Kiplings' version of the Jungle Book doesn't have a single storyline. It is a collection of short stories, songs, and poetry each with their own characters and in many cases unrelated stories.
