From the US it would be 011-353 followed by the area code (without the leading '0' trunk code) then the number

for instance the number (01) 1234567

Would become 011-353-1-1234567

(The US uses the prefix 011 for international calls, not 00 as in most of Europe.)

It depends whether you're calling Northern Ireland - or the Republic of Ireland. If you're calling a number in Northern Ireland - the international code is +44. For the Irish Republic, it's +353.

Calls from the Republic of Ireland to the UK (except landlines in Northern Ireland) must be dialed in full international format. Drop the trunk prefix 0 from the beginning of the UK number and replace it with telephone country code +44. Calling from a mobile phone, enter the number beginning with the plus symbol; calling from a landline phone, use 00 in place of the plus symbol.

For example:

UK mobile number: 07700 900123

Dial from Irish mobile: +44 7700 900123

Dial from Irish landline: 00 44 7700 900123

Note that to dial a landline in Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland, you can simply replace the area code 028 with the special shortcut code 048. For all other calls from Ireland to the UK, use the procedure outlined above.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

First you have to gain international access, so you dial 011. The international dialling code for Ireland is 353, so that is dialled next. Then you dial the Irish number you are trying to call, leaving out the leading zero.

So if the number you were dialling in Ireland was:

01 9999 999

you would dial:

011 353 1 9999 999
