haem - relating to blood.

So it is looking at all the cells in your blood to diagnose disease. (red, white and platelets essentially). Most common test is a Full blood count (FBC), which counts the numbers and percentages of each of these cells to look for any obvious abnormalities. Its quite a broad test checking from anything ranging from leukaemia to anaemia.

There are different sub branches such as transfusion (to issue blood units for transfusion) and coagulation (to find out why you have a clot or are bleeding).
