The first book in A Series of Unfortunate Events focuses on the three Baudlaire orphans, whose parents are believed to be dead after their mansion was burned down. They are sent to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf. Count Olaf treats them horribly. He actually attempts to marry the eldest orphan to obtain their vast fortune. However, minutes before his plan was completed the very intelligent orphans find a way to expose his plan to the public, saving the children, but allowing Olaf to escape.

As for underlying themes in the book, greed is a huge factor in Count Olaf's character. His greed leads him into harrassing and torturing people just so he can get rich. Besides greed, altruism also has a role in the story. The orphans meet a lady who is very generous. She sympathizes with them and wants them to be happy. Then there is also to orphans themselves who symbolize goodness and intelligence. Overall, I would say that Snicket is trying to tell us that if we use our creativity and kindness, no matter what kind of horrible situations we are put in, we can find the good in everything.

If by theme you mean 'What is the series about?', it is about three kids Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Their house burned down in a mysterious fire. The kids are sent to live with their uncle, Count Olaf ( whom they have never heard of before.) He turns out to be a evil villain, trying to steal their huge inheritance. He tries everything, form trying to marry Violet to killing Klaus and Violet. It's is a very good series, and I recommend it with all my heart. But if you don't like murders or completely idiotic bankers, I suggest you don't read it, but who doesn't?

there is no theme LOL.

The theme is that several children named Violet, Klous, and Sunny, have had their house burn down, along with the death of their parents. It was an "Unfortunate Event". This is the first book of the series. They go to to Count Olaf, who is a relative to their parents. They stay at his house, which is rather terrible, and soon find out that he is also, along with the house, a terrible person. Count Olaf is constantly trying to get the children to stay with him and kill them so he is able to get the great fortune of which they own. The three poor children go to many people, trying to find a place to stay. However, Olaf always spoils the visit by trying to get them. More and more into the series, he keeps failing to get them, but is able to get away. Keep reading this exciting book to find out more!

Okay, this is good but please for Heaven's sake find out how to spell Klaus!
