Daoism was founded in China by Lao-tzu (604-531 BCE), although some believe he is a mythical character. He accomplished this by looking for a way that would avoid the wars and other conflicts that disrupted the society during his lifetime. His search resulted in a book that he wrote: Tao-te-Ching (a.k.a. Daodejing), consisting of 81 short verses, in 3rd or 4th century BC. Like most other ancient Chinese thinkers, Lao-tze explained his ideas poetically, using rhyme, rhythm, symmetry, paradox, analogy, appropriation of ancient sayings, repetition, etc.
