The timing mark on a Chevy Inline 6 engine is located on the flywheel. It is a steel ball. The timing needs to?æbe located at 4 degrees BTDC.
there will be a timing mark on the harmonic balancer. and a timing tab on the timing chain cover. point your timing light at the timing tab and you should see the timing mark on balancer. if not timing is way out.markstang.
30 degrees dwell, timing is the second mark above the O mark on the timing tab.
the timing mark is an engraved line on the flywheel. there should be a metal flap offset of the flywheel with markings for A (advanced), O (ontime), and R (retarded). use a timing light connected to the spark plug wire for #1 cylinder. That is how it is in my 65 impala 327 Minor correction is that the timing mark is on the front damper not the flywheel.
Top Dead Center
The timing mark is one the Harmonic balancer and the pointer is attached to the timing cover. Roll the motor over to the timing mark, the be sure and mark the number one plug {marked on the intake manifold} the position of the rotor pointer on the distributer.

One is advance mark, one is retard mark, one is dead on mark.
If you look at the harmonic balance you will see on the front of it a medium size circle. That will be your timing mark.
That means the timing chain and gears are worn out / to loose.
You need a timing light, hooked to the #1 spark plug, pointed at the timing mark on the main pulley on the front of the engine.
