The tone of a poem is the basic mood or atmosphere created when you read it. It's made up of many elements - the flow of the lines, the meaning of the words, the language used and the way in which the poem is expressed. Tone is sometimes a very subjective thing and may differ from person to person, depending on their interpretation of the poem.

For example look at these opening words from American poet Robert Pinsky's

ABC

Any body can die, evidently. Few

Go happily, irradiating joy,

What sensations are you feeling as you digest each line? What is the author attempting to create? Have the words a resigned tone or a philosophical one? Are they the words of someone who works in a mortuary or a religious minister? Do they create a rather sad tone, or a realistic one?

If only life was as easy as ABC, a happy frolic through the alphabet of existence the poet might be implying.
