Glycolysis produces pyruvate. The fate of this pyruvate depends mainly on the availability of which of the following?

Molecular oxygen

What happens in the pyruvate reaction?

One of the three carbon atoms that make up pyruvate is cleaved off by the rather large enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase. This carbon atom attached to oxygen and becomes carbon dioxide(what you exhale). This reaction is known as a decarboxylation reaction. Then the other two remaining carbon atoms make up an acetyl group. Along with the acetyl group is hydrogen which will reduce NAD+ to NADH. The acetyl group is added to coenzyme a, and is called acetyl coenzyme a, or acetyl CoA for short. This is the ultimate creation of the oxidation of pyruvate. If there is a high concentration of ATP then the acetyl-CoA is used for fatty acid biosynthesis. If not than it will be used for oxidative metabolism. That's the basics of it for it is very complex.

What is the fate of stars?

Star Birth as a Protostar. Stars are born within molecular clouds in the Galaxy. The mass of a protostar determines its place on the H-R diagram, its energy source, its ultimate fate. Then, the final stage when the core is fused to iron.

Why does energy flow through an ecosystem rather than be recycled in it?

All energy comes from the sun, and that the ultimate fate of all energy in ecosystems is to be lost as heat. Energy does not recycle!! since the energy is not returned to the sun.

How is carbon cycled through living and nonliving things in an ecosystem?

Energy "flows" through the ecosystem in the form of carbon-carbon bonds. When respiration occurs, the carbon-carbon bonds are broken and the carbon is combined with oxygen to form carbon dioxide. This process releases the energy, which is either used by the organism (to move its muscles, digest food, excrete wastes, think, etc.) or the energy may be lost as heat. "Respiration", which to the layperson usually refers to "breathing", means "the extraction of energy from carbon-carbon bonds at the cellular level" to most scientists (except those scientists studying breathing, who use respiration in the lay sense). The dark arrows represent the movement of this energy. Note that all energy comes from the sun, and that the ultimate fate of all energy in ecosystems is to be lost as heat. Energy does not recycle!!
