Channel lock pliers are very versatile. My main use of them is for holding large and awkwardly sized objects, for instance, clearance trap nuts under sinks.

assuming you have a screw on plastic locking gas cap you could use a large pair of channel lock pliers to squeeze the sides in and turn it, if it is metal this will damage the cap.
