Dynamite and related explosives aer used primarily to break rock in mining and construction, and to cut concrete and steel in demolition. Modern construction uses concrete, and modern road building uses asphalt paving. Both require the use of crushed stone- which can only be produced economically by using explosives. It is also critical in the mining of most metal ores.

In the past it was used for demolition and for mining. Today it's mostly used to detonate ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Those take a LOT of energy to get moving, and blasting caps aren't enough.
