It is really just to show younger people how different things react, usually after performing this experiment the class will be taught the meaning of the terms independent, dependant and controlled variables and will identify these terms within the experiment. Eg.

∙ 10y agoThe experiment with Coca Cola and Mentos is a good illustration of chemistry in action. More specifically, Diet Coke is used. It is the carbon dioxide in the Diet Coke and the little dimples found on the Mentos candy pieces that create quite a spectacular reaction.

You get a 2 litres of coke (Diet Coke works the best) and leave the cap off in an large, open area and put three~four of mentos (mint ones are better than fruit flavoured ones) in and then it will make a coke geyser.
