Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be a D or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 12/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $18

Moderately worn - $37

Slightly worn - $96

Almost no wear - $343

Uncirculated - $456 to $11,050 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Very worn - $18

Moderately worn - $38

Slightly worn - $101

Almost no wear - $349

Uncirculated - $480 to $6,440

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $18

Moderately worn - $44

Slightly worn - $120

Almost no wear - $416

Uncirculated - $600 to $8,190

These coins are often called Barber halves after their designer, Charles Barber.

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
