On Vashon Island, WA in the mid nineteen thirties, Dad bartered a
used hand cranked milk separator for a 30.40 Krag and I'm assuming
it was with a Norwegian as we were surrounded. I was somewhere
around 6 years old at the time. I Remember the gun vividly as Dad
kept and hunted with it for years thereafter. He was a sharp
shooter with it. In retrospect, I would guess the swap came to
about $25. We lost it in a fire Jan. 18, 1950. I have no idea of
the shape it was in as I never could hit a thing with it -- but at
a 100 yards Dad, in his prime, could bore a beer bottle cap with it.
