US quarters were never made of sterling silver. Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper; it's most commonly used in silverware, jewelry, and other decorative items but is too soft for use in coins.

Up till 1964 quarters were struck in "coin silver" which is 10% copper. That extra 2.5% was enough to make the alloy hard enough to stand up to daily wear.

At a minimum a common-date silver quarter is worth about 1/7 the price of an ounce of silver if melted. Older ones can be worth considerably more to a collector but you need to know the date, mint mark, and condition to determine a value.
