Of course the value of a Colt Det. Special w/ pearl grips will be dependant on several variables. The condition of the pistol is of course key, also which series Det. Special the gun is; 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Finally, the finish of the revolver will also affect the value. EXAMPLE: A 3rd series Colt Detective Special, in MINT condition, NIB (new in box), and with a Nickel finish -- $1,000 Blued finish $800.00.
This model was available in a nickel finish at this time, so it could be a factory finish. It could also have been nickled after it left the factory. You can contact the factory (or the Cody Museum in Wyoming) and pay for a letter which will state the new shipped condition and original purchaser.
The finish is definitely not stainless steel was not invented as of yet, likely a nickel plate finish. Circa is somewhere between very late 1800's til the 1930's Hope that is of some help! Blue Mt Gunworks
You probably have what is commonly refered to as a "re-nickel" pistol. This means that the nickel is not the original finish. Also, the grips as described are not original either. What you have is a "shooter" not a "collector" pistol. This being said, and without actually seing it, it is probably worth $200-$250 depending on condition.
It is unlikely that those are Colt factory grips.
No such model number as 392. If you mean a S&W 39-2, @ 1980. Chrome is not a factory finish. If it is Nickel, value between 50-450 USD.
2010 Blue Book of Gun Value Thity-Fifth Edition on page 576 shows nickel with 95% is about $877 down to 50% nickel about $375 if original grips are undamaged. Your serial number was mfg in 1908. The real value is what someone will actually pay you on any given day.
The Capitan HP model with a high polish Blueing came with wood grips. The matted finish came with Black plastic grips.
Not enough information. Serial Number? Markings? Type of grips? Finish (blue, parkerized, nickel)? Overall condition? Does it have the orignal box and papers? Does it have a Colt letter? Price range could be from 100- 1000.
Good condition with orig grips blue $1000 nickel $1400.
