What were Douglas MacArthur experiences in work?

MacArthur was the son and grandson of career US Army officers. He spent his entire adult life in the US Army, from the time he enrolled as a cadet at the US Military Academy in 1897. MacArthur was the youngest general in the US Army in WWI, and commanded an infantry division for the last week or two of the war. MacArthur rose to be the Chief of Staff (the title given to the commanding general) of the US Army in 1931, and held this post for four years, twice as long as a man usually did. He "retired" in 1937 and went to the Philippine Islands, which were a US possession but were being prepared for independence. MacArthur was to be a Field Marshal commanding the Philippine Army. MacArthur had lived in the Philippines as a boy, when his father was military governor of the islands, and had killed his first man there as a young second lieutenant fresh out of West Point. MacArthur was "recalled" to active duty in the summer of 1941 as war clouds began darkening the US horizon.
