The Vice President is the President of the Senate, a largely ceremonial role, whose only real power lies in breaking tie votes in the Senate, the strongest recent example of which was Al Gore breaking the 50-50 tie in the Senate for the Clinton Tax Hikes of 1993.
The Vice President's main responsibility is to replace the President on the event of his or her dying, if he or she resigns, or is unable to fulfill his or her duties. Vice Presidents may also attend events that the President may be too busy for. For example they may attend funerals of world leaders that the President admired and can't be there. The Vice President is, in some ways, similar to a Dental Assistant. The dentist performs the procedures and is the boss, while the assistant "assists" him or her. In the same way, the President is the main man in charge and he is "the boss", but his Vice President is there to assist him.
The vice president's main duty is to preside over the Senate. The VP can only, however, cast a vote if there is a tie. However, the VP also advises the president in addition to that duty.

We don't have a Vice-President here in Ireland. The Presidency is a less demanding position here than in some other countries. "An Taoiseach" (the Irish equivalent of Prime Minister) is the head of the government and is the more powerful position. Our President's functions and duties are similar to those of the Queen in England, 'approving' Acts of our Parliament, 'appointing' the Prime Minister and government ministers, and similar.
