∙ 13y agoThere is a 3-gallon container, a 5-gallon container, and a fountain. An explosive device is attached to a scale, and the only way to disarm to bomb is to take a container (the larger one, obviously) and fill it with EXACTLY four gallons of water.
I believe in the movie, if memory serves, the hero fills the 3-gallon jug and pours it into the 5-gallon jug, then fills up the 3-gallon jug partway, adds it to the liquid in the 5-gallon jug and gets really lucky. An actual solution is as follows (note: there are many solutions, but this is in the fewest number of steps):
-Fill the 5-gallon jug and pour exactly 3 gallons out into the 3-gallon jug (there are 2 gallons remaining in the 5-gallon jug).
-Empty the 3-gallon jug, and pour the contents of the 5-gallon jug (2 gallons of water) into the 3-gallon jug (5-gallon jug is empty, 2 gallons in the 3-gallon jug).
-Fill the 5-gallon jug and from that, fill the 3-gallon jug to capacity.
In doing so, you pour 1 gallon from the 5-gallon jug, leaving a full 3-gallon jug and EXACTLY 4 gallons in the larger container, ready to disarm the device.
ADDED: Umm he didnt just get 'lucky' in the movie, he solved the riddle the EXACT same way that you listed. Except in the movie it is very confusing because they dont show you how he manages to got 2 gallons of water into the 3 gallon bottle. maybe they cut a scene for time reasons or maybe to confuse everyone on purpose
