In Maine, "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute" is a popular saying. The weather is usually a hot topic even on a cold day. If a person does not like the cold temperatures, Maine is not the place to live. However, we do have some warm spells in the summer that make us long for the coolness of early spring or late fall (not winter). Maine temperatures vary from +/- minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 100+, but not usually on the same day. We have experienced up to a 40-degree difference in one day on several occasions. Sunday was a balmy, spring-like day with temps in the 60's and Monday was a cold, blustery day with temps in the 40's. Our winters are not as severe as even 20-30 years ago, certainly not anything like our ancestors suffered through in the early part of the century. Most people who live in Maine year-round have a favorite season - usually spring or fall.
It should also be kept in mind that Maine is a large state with varying types of weather. For example, the coastline is usually cooler and damper than inland, and the mountainous sections are obviously also cooler than the flatlands. And even more obviously, the northern tip is cooler than the southern tip. An example is this past winter, 2007 -2008 where there was a band of central Maine that had over 190 inches of total snow while northwest of this band they had less than 30 inches total.
Winter Hi temps usually average in the mid 20s in the south/coast, to around 20 central/north. We have snowy years and dry years, and the lakes freeze thick. Early spring is usually snowy at first, and mid spring the snow and ice begins to melt (slowly at first, than rapidly, often causing severe flooding), all the snow is gone and the lakes have iced-out by early-mid may. Some parts of the northern Maine woods might have a little snow left at this time, but not much. The ground remains saturated until June usually. Temps usually average around 40 in the early months, 50 in the mid months, and 60+ in the late months. Summer temps can be hot, but usually hang in the 70s during June, and around 80 July and August, there is a coastal seabreeze a lot of the time though. There are a lot of summertime thunderstorms, and there are a lot more cloudy days than sunny. You can expect dense morning fog about 60% of summer mornings. In the fall dry weather arrives and the leaves change beautifully, there is A LOT of sunshine during this period, but drenching rainy periods come through every then and again. September temps range in the 60s and October in the 50s, and 40s/30s in November, but during October/November the north starts to get cold, and sometimes even see some short-lived snow. Late November is when snow usually starts to arrive everywhere except some coastal and southern communities, and frost comes around September 10th.
Northern part of the state tends to be drier and colder in comparison to the southern and coastal areas while the sea keeps the coastl tempatures modate. Snowfall ocurs in the winter
Here are the climates for the seasons-
Winter- Cold, snowy
Spring- Warmer then winter, around the 50s
Summer- Warm temperatures. Around the low 70s
Fall- Cool, breezy climates.
