In the real world, machines are never 100% efficient. There is always loss of energy, usually due to friction.

By contrast, in physics problems, an "ideal machine" is a hypothetical device which is perfectly efficient. The assumption of perfect efficiency allows the problem to focus on the fundamental mechanical principles.
