Because the rate at which sound propagates changes with temperature, it is possible for sound to be refracted by changes in the air temperature at low altitudes. Sounds may be refracted toward or away from a listener. This can create what is known as a "shadow zone" a short distance from the sound source, where the sound will be diminished or not heard at all.
i think it is that the air is cooler than the ground
