How do you find the greatest common factor by using prime factors?
1. Step one if factor all the numbers ( two or more of them) into their prime factorization. 2. Step two, take common primes that have the lowest power from each number and multiply those together. (The primes with the highest common power) You need common factors so if one number has 26 and one has 24 then they only have 24 in common so you take that as part of your gcf. If they have no common primes, then you just take p0 =1 for that prime in your product. Let's do an example to illustrate it. example 1. Find the gcf of 12 and 6. We know that 6 is a factor of 12 and clearly there is no bigger factor of 6 than itself, so in this case we know the answer is 6. The idea is to show that with primes and come up with the same answer. 6=2x3 12=22 x3 The lowest power of 3 is 31 =3 so we take that. The lowest power of 2 is 21 so we take that. The gcf is 2x3=6 Now a little more challenging one. We will create 3 numbers and find their gcf. Since we are creating them using prime factorization, find the gcf will be easy. In real life you would have the three numbers, 2205, 17325 and 38115 and need to find their gcf. This just means finding their prime factorization first, then creating a product with the common primes to the highest common power. Let's look at 32 x5x 72 =2205 and 33 x52 x7x 11=17325 and 33 x5x7x112 =38115 The common factors in our product are 32 x5x7=315 so that is the gcf.
