As with any coin, the condition (or grade) is vital in determining its value. There are a number of websites and printed references that can assist in grading a coin. Grading is an experience based craft, but there is generally enough differentiation in the lower grades that novices can do okay. Regardless of the grading resource used, be sure they follow the American Numismatic Association's (ANA) standard for grading. In Very Fine condition, around $25. Extremely Fine retails for about $35, and uncirculated could be from $65 to several hundred dollars depending on how good the strike is. If your coin is uncirculated it would have to be appraised in person by a knowledgeable dealer or appraiser to get an accurate value.

As with any collectible, a primary consideration in determining its value is its condition (or grade). Novice collectors, with some practice, can become quite accurate in determining grades for circulated coins (G-4 through AU-50). It becomes much more difficult when assigning grades for Uncirculated coins (MS-60 through MS-70) or Proof coins (PF-60 through PF-70) and the assistance of an experienced coin collector or trusted coin dealer should be sought. Another consideration is whether the coin has a mintmark, indicating where the coin was made: None or P = Phila D = Denver (1906-present) O = New Orleans (up to 1909)

S = San Francisco (up to 1955; occasionally after that on circulating coins, 1968+ on proofs)

CC = Carson City (up to 1893)

Whichever resource you choose to use, ensure that they follow the grading guidelines established by the American Numismatic Association (ANA). Check on the back above the DO in DOLLAR to see if there's a small mint mark letter. Possibilities are blank, O, or S.

Numismedia lists the following retail values as of 03/2009:

No mint mark or "O":

Very worn condition - $16

Moderately worn - $18

Slightly worn - $20

Almost no wear - $23

With an "S":

$17 / $23 / $32 / $90

Uncirculated ones are worth considerably more.

The term "very good" can be used to describe a term in bad condition. If this is the way this term was used it is worth around $240. If it was not used that way and is actually in very good condition it is worth $700 to $3,750 depending on condition.
