there isn't any resistance in space so if something is moving in space, it won't stop until some kind of resistance occurs. the gravitational force and the associated attraction keeps the asteroids moving in space.
Gravity. That's what keeps them in orbit. Basically objects with mass pull other smaller objects towards them.
If the objects approached the object that is pulling them in in the correct way from the correct angle they become caught in orbit around that larger object (In this case the Sun is the larger and the planets the smaller) That covers the why.
