I believe that the cache memory stores certain copied information that you go to most often from the hard drive. So, the unit checks the cache memory first before it checks the whole hard drive. That way you can find the location of a certain file faster in the smaller (cache) memory versus finding it in the bigger hard drive where it takes longer to find that same file.

In multiple-processor systems, a problem called cache incoherence can occur when two or more processors access the same region, modifies the data in different ways and not immediately writing back the data to the main RAM. It will cause two different versions of the same region existing simultaneously, causing problems. That is why mutexes or other locks should be used when accessing shared memory.

You don't. A Cache is made to Store/structure temporary file information/data to allow quick access to in the future. In a way the Cache is kind of like Virtual RAM(Random Access Memory), built in to the Operating Systems architecture to help assist your computer in remembering what's been going on by logging/storing it(Caching), as a temporary file/itemdata.

Here's an analogy: You're in your room working on a paper for class. You get to a point where you need to quote a periodical, but its in the car. You walk down to the car get the periodical, go back to your room and continue working on your paper. Repeat this 10 times for 10 different things. Imagine instead you go down to the car once, take all the periodicals and put them on the desk next to you. Now when you want to quote a line all your materials are next to you. That is WAY faster. Same principle. Fetching data from disk (your hard drive) is amazingly slow. When we have to fetch data from disk its better to take a big block, push it into a faster kind of memory (some kind of RAM or register) and fetch data from those blocks instead.
