What kind of drinks can you make with tequila?

Fair disclosure - I own the tequila brand Voodoo Tiki Tequila.

Generally speaking, 100% blue agave tequila is better than mixto tequila. A 100% blue agave tequila must by law be marked as such. If your bottle does not say 100% blue Agave on the bottle front it is a mixto, and thus inferior.

Once we're talking 100% blue agave the rest is going to depend upon your personal taste. Silver tequila (Sometimes called blanco or platinum) is not aged. Aging times can result in higher prices (and taste fluctuations) but despite the price increases the processes do not make for "Better" tequila. Different, and higher priced, but not necessarily better. It's a personal taste issue.

All quality brands of tequila have a "Profile", and what is best to you may not be best to someone else.

If you were asking because you wanted to buy a gift for someone, and we're looking for "Top End", many brands make limited edition, ultra premium editions of their products. Jose Cuervo's is known as "Family Reserve." Patron's Ultra Premium is called "Burdeos." Don Julio makes an ultra premium called "1942." I think it is 1 1/2 jigger of Xalixco Silver Tequila in a frozen beer glass, then pour in a cold (40 degrees) Heineken beer (Holland), add squeeze of 1/2 lime and drop it in and gently stir. I call this a BURRO ON A WINDMILL. (Warning: limit consumption. The name means what it says.)

Generally speaking, tequila is like wine in the sense that "best" is subjective despite the fact that tequila afficionado's can at least generally agree on "What is Very Good."

The Best selling premium tequila in America is Patron Silver, which is a 100% Blue Agave Silver Tequila. The consensus is that it is good tequila with a very neutral taste. Tequila fans generally have a good feeling about patron even if they've graduated to better "Boutique" tequilas because for many it was Patron that introduced them to the wonderful world of tequila.

The best selling Mixto tequila (51% agave) is Jose Cuervo Gold. This is not considered good tequila by any means, and many tequila fans turn up their noses at the brand for it's poor quality. Many a "would be" tequila lover has been scared away from tequila forever after a caramel colored tequila Cuervo inspired hangover.

The best selling infused tequila is Voodoo Tiki Prickly Pear Infused Tequila, which is the primary ingredient in the famous Prickly Pear Margarita.

The Best Selling Flavored Tequila is TaranTula.

The Best Selling Coffee Tequila is Patron Cafe. This is a very popular shot in the North Eastern United States.

In terms of taste, "The Best" is very subjective. Tequilas are created using similar processes, but slight differences in raw materials, cooking time and standards can result in major taste differences in the finished product. Some very interesting boutique tequilas that have been rated very high include Partida, Corvo, Asombroso, Voodoo Tiki and Buscadores.

The most famous tequila cocktail is the Margarita. There are many recipes for the Margarita, as her history and origin is a topic of debate. The most common ultra-premium tequila recipe for the Margarita is:

2 oz 100% blue agave reposado tequila

1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice

.5 oz agave nectar

Shake well with ice. Serve on the rock or strain into an up glass.

Probably the 2nd most well known tequila cocktail is the Tequila Sunrise. This is an Orange Juice based cocktail. It is "Well Known" and not "Popular" because although everyone has heard of this drink, they don't get ordered much. The recipe is:

1.5 oz tequila (preferably 100% blue agave)

3 oz Orange Juice

.5 oz Pomegranate Syrup (Grenadine)

Combine all ingredients with ice in a highball (tall) glass, pouring the Pom syrup last.
