Rhode Island, in the New England colonies, had the first place in America where people could worship freely.
In Colonial Times, you did not have to be part of religion. The Rhode Island Colony was established for freedom of worshiping.
He found the religious intolerance of the other colonies too restrictive and founded Rhode Island to provide a place of refuge. He was expelled from the Massachusetts Colony and even lived in Plymouth for a while. Travel was by canoe and boat.
The first English colony comprising of men, women and boys was founded in 1587 on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. It failed. The first permanent settlement was at Jamestown in Virginia in 1607. Two earlier reconnaissance voyages to Roanoke Island took place in 1584 and 1585 but they were not intended to be permanent settlements. They were reconnaissance trips to find a place suitable for a military bastion.
