Years ago, people who wanted to enter this profession either went to a vocational school (a "broadcasting school"), which was usually a 9-month to one year course in the basics of how to broadcast; or they worked their way up by volunteering at a small, local station. But these days, the demands of the industry are far more exacting, and competition is more intense. Thus, it is generally expected that a person will attend a university with a strong department of broadcast journalism (including radio and television, but also internet). Some community colleges (two years) have such programs, but most of today's journalists attended a four-year college. This does not necessarily mean they graduated, but many did.

The experience you can get working at your university's radio or television station is invaluable. And the courses you will take, if you attend a respected broadcast journalism department, are often taught by actual professionals working in the industry. At your university, you will study a wide range of important subjects, from the history of broadcasting and broadcast journalism to media analysis and criticism, media ethics, and practical courses like news-writing and reporting.
