There is some evidence that the Miwoks, who lived in what is today Northern California, enjoyed playing sports. They seemed to have some athletic contests that involved using a ball made of elk hide, and trying to score goals; both men and women played these kinds of games, although the rules were slightly different for the men's version.

According to historians, the Miwok Indians appeared short in height, dark skinned with flat noses. The Indians had long black hair in which they wore oyster shells to pull it away from their face. Overall, they wore moccasins and animal skin for clothing.
In winter, the Miwok Indians lived in housed that were hallway underground and covered with dirt to help them keep warm. In the summer, their dwellings were generally cone shaped and had a pole framework. They were covered with bark because it helped keep them cool. They also used brush, grass, and tule to make their homes.
