2. Become certified! One popular organization is ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologist). This organization provides testing that allows passing candidates to gain certification and credentials; thus, allowing for higher salary and marketability for potential medical technology job candidates. Its a small price to pay for a big long-term reward.
3. Become a 'specialist' in a particular by utilizing the ASCP specialty examination and credentialing. For example, a Medical Technologist who is certified as a generalist MLS (ASCP) can become certified in blood banking, hematology, chemistry, management, and more (ie. MLS (ASCP)H - Hematology Specialist). This route requires testing and financial obligation.
4. One can utilize the hierarchy that exist in most laboratories in applying to a supervisory role. Positions include charge techs, lead technologist, assistant supervisor, and supervisors. Qualification are limited to professional credentials, years of experience, and knowledge in regards to supervisory role. Starting as a charge tech is a stepping stone to a larger position.
5. Participate in case studies, conferences, writing exploits, and other 'extra-curricular' activities. Continuing education credits are necessary in maintaining licensure and required by many laboratories.
