Harry Potter does, indeed, have an Owl. The Owl's name is Hedwig and is a female. She's bought for Harry, as a gift, by Hagrid in the first book, 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'. She is often considered to be Harry Potter's familiar (Animal Life-Match) in many fanfiction stories. Hedwig dies in the last book, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'. She's hit by an 'Avada Kedavra' while escaping from Death Eaters in Sirius' old flying Motorcycle.

If you've watched the third movie, you will see that Harry's patronus is a stag, which is the animal his dad turns into because he is an un-registered animagus.
